    Default reinz gasket kit question

I have your 2.0 bus gasket kit for my 1.8 914. I have a question about the large sealing rings. I suppose they are for the cylinder to case seal?

4 come shrink wrapped to card board, VR part # 61-23410-00.
4 more are thinner and come in a baggie, VR part # 17-00121-01.
    and
4 more are much thicker, also in a baggie with 4 other seals that include stud holes VR part# 17-00097-01.

I have gone thru my CR calcs and I need just a bit more deck height to get closer to the 8:1 needed for my 9550 cam. I have calc'd that I need about a 0.5 mm shim.

Can you tell me if that is what all these are designed for?

Some are for the cylinder/ head seal.. DO NOT USE THOSE. Take pics of what you have separately, post them and we'll tell you where they go.

Default pictures of shims and seals in question.

As suggested, here are some pix... I have also now opened and measured each. Thanks

The 93mm ID gaskets are head gaskets- throw them away. The other gaskets can be used for deck height and correction if necessary.

Jake, let me run this by you. I have your 9550 cam, and plan to use the L-jet FI (1911cc). I calculated my CR at 8.35. My deck height average is 1.62mm. You told me early on 8.25 was the top of the acceptable range, but you felt the stated 8.0 was best if I could get there. Now that I am to the point of actually doing the work on the engine and I have the 0.2mm shim in hand, should I spend the extra effort to get a 0.4mm shim to get to 8.005. Or should I go with the 0.2mm to get 8.22 CR?

This is where you have to assume the role and make your own decision... Because if I don't build it, I don't recommend it. You have to also remember that the perfect engine doesn't exist.

I feel that if I knew the consequences of my actions that I could make the right decision for my situation. Can we go at this a different way and use a more general question to get a specific answer? Can you give me an example of what I might see, or feel or my engine might experience if the quoted Compression Ratio for a particular cam is exceeded?

Excess heat and uncontrolled combustion. Unless you are planning on running 100 Octane (even then...) don't do it. Stay within Jake's recommendations for the cam. Going a .25 point less from the max will keep you out of trouble and you will give up very little.

If you use a CR thats over what we have developed the cam to be optimized with, I have no idea what will happen in that circumstance because it is always a variable occurrence.

Going higher than optimum can mean increasing the chances for detonation, even if the engine doesn't run hotter.
