    Default Ceramic coating for 914 headers

    I have a question about ceramic coating that someone here may be able to answer.

    Jet Hot claims that its headers post coating give off way less radiant heat then non-coated (thermal insulation.)

    Other local ceramic coaters just claim that the coating holds up under the high heat headers have to deal with. (appearance and rust protection) They don't mention the insulation unless I bring it up, and then can't give a quantifiable response other then "the pipes do cool down faster, we have noticed that," or something similar.

    Does all ceramic coating provide thermal insulation?

    Also, how the heck does Jet Hot coat internal pipe surfaces? Liquid bath instead of a spray on application?

    Zach,
    The Jet Hot coating isn't really any different than other companies' coatings.
    They all reduce the radiated heat and lower the external temp by 200 deg. or so.
    The only product that is substantially different is offered by Swaintech.

    The internal coating is most likely applied with a sponge or rag on the end of a flexible shaft. That's how my supplier (Central CT Coatings) does it.

    In that case, I'll go with one of the local shops then. Both the local shops quoted prices ~1/2 of the cost of Jet Hot, and one of the guys I talked to used to be into 914s.

    In my experience they all rust and etc in time, none of them are a lifetime coating.. at least in my climate and forrms of usage. (wide ass open)

    Chris, Can the coating on my Tangerine headers be redone? I had a small fire involving melted ignition wires shortly after installing them and the coating looks a bit crystallized. I have always wanted to redo it and they are off right now...

    Rob,
    Yes it can be redone. The original coating must be stripped first before the new coating is applied.
    In the past, my supplier has not charged me any extra for stripping when I had to get a re-coat due to various reasons.
    The company that does their stripping is right around the corner from them.

    Should I use them? Or can you suggest a more local company? How much should I expect to pay. I need new hardware too. Maybe I should get a hardware list from you. These headers have been on and off about 5 times. I am always pretty careful with fasteners but enough is enough...

    I think there is very little difference in properties from one coating companies product to the next. Check out Jet Hot, as I believe there is one in CA.
    Central CT Coatings will probably cost about $150, $200 if I handle the transaction because I will hand carry it to them. Shipping costs (and the possibility of damage) cross-country is the only reason I would suggest another vendor.
